we have a 6mx6m pond with a depth of around 2ft we have a small island and was hoping to fill it with soil and rocks and plant a tree we were wondering what type of tree we could use and if it would be possible at all. we were hoping that even if the roots of the tree pierce the liner the water that leaked out would saturate the soil and little leaking would happen. If needed we could fill the rest of the pond with a substrate as well. The island is made from a raised liner which goes about six inches below the water level this is where we hoped to fill it with soil to above the water line. Any help would be appreciated.

I think you would be very sad if tree roots pierced your liner. Leaking does not stop because the ground is saturated... there's always more ground.

How about if you share a photo of your pond so we can get a better idea of what you're trying to accomplish!

How small is the island?

I have a roughly 3’ diameter island in one of my ponds with a dwarf weeping Japanese maple planted in it. It’s been in for a little over 6 years I doubt the small maple tree roots will ever pierce the liner.

I do have to net out all the leaves in the fall though, but it isn’t too bad.

Sorry to answer a question with a question but Is this something you plan to have growing outdoors year round? Perhaps a container grown (and contained) dwarf tree brought inside during winter would work. Absolutely agree, you don’t want the roots perforating the pond liner....ever.
