i would say a test kit that uses liquid drops and not strips... generally they run about $25-$30 and will test ph, ammonia, nitrites and phosphorus and i hear another important test is for kh which you can buy separately for around $10

Good enough! It's been years since I kept aquarium fish, but do recall running my water checks with liquid stuff. Think I used strips, too, but for some reason, the drops stand out. Think I'll shop today.
