We have an 80,000 gallon Koi pond. It has never been filtered and the water is green.

Over the weekend we spent big bucks and bought an aerator for our back 1/4 pond. The results are amazing. Probably going to put one in the koi pond too.

Great news! It may be expensive, but the results will be long lasting and satisfying!

Now that you have circulation breaking down organic material, you're going to have nitrates and phosphate available.
I recommend measuring for those 2 plus KH and GH.
Bacteria require oxygen from the circulation, carbonates and trace minerals to keep doing their job.
Excess nitrates can be taken up by plants, but string algae may be what benefits from the phosphates.
Phosphates can be chemically bound by clay or be consumed by plants.

BOG filter and a intake bay will fix your issues!! I’m so happy I did a BOG. Only way to go you can build an external bog and flow water through it back into your pond.

New member. This thread found during a search of 80,000 gallon pond. Keeping this for tracking the convo.
Just bought a house with a 90,000 gallon pond in Maple Valley, WA. Former homeowners kept ducks and entertained and housed native wood ducks, and other waterfowl. Emptied the pond to find 30+ years of muck and debris 2' thick across the entire bottom. Roughly 10 yards of material (Great compost) Currently in the process of cleaning it out an re-lining it. Planning on a waterfall and aeration. Now looking into a "Bog" for algae growth. Thanks!

@Pahchay Hello and welcome! Lots of help and advice in this group!

Why not go over to our “introductions “ topic and tell us about yourself and your pond ( WOW, 90,000 gallons!!). Since this is an older thread, your post is probably going to get lost here. Oh, and please post some pictures for us — we love to see pictures!
