I know China fairly well, I visit at least once a year, was just there last month for a bike race.

Regional areas of china is no different than places like Vegas and Florida where developments have been built and only bought by investors. Few moved in though the infrastructure is in place. it's really a shame considering all the poverty in China, but the same could probably be said here.

These ghost cities were also built in order to keep their citizens employed - even though there was no demand for the cities.
Much the same as China is doing with solar power and coal generation - it keeps their citizens employed.
Try competing with a state run company - they don't have the same objective as we in the west do - making a profit.
That's why allowing a foreign owned state run company to take over any of our industries is a bad idea.
It creates unfair competition for locally run companies.

China sounds like a crazy place. I would like to visit there someday.
-as long as they don't have "minders" like North Korea....

Folks here would have a field day just enjoying ponds in China. here's a few pics from my visit last month. I didn't intentionally look for ponds but ended up with quite a few. Ponding is so common in China, just like owning cats and dogs here in the states. It's engrained in their culture.

I think that those "ghost cities" that were built in Mongolia are an attempt to attain sovereignty over an adjacent area, much like building on the disputed islands in the Yellow Sea.
