When it rains here in the Northwest, it doesn't always rain as hard as other states I've been to. Just drizzles for long periods at times. I have observed earth worms, and what we call here, big night crawlers stretched out over the side walks. I have to assume that the soil gets so saturated that they come out for air. Maybe I'm wrong, or even way off track.

My whole point is, I have also seen worms coming out of the soil around my pond and hanging in my pond. Also some seen to slide into my pond. Worms in my pond don't seem to create a problem because I have seen my larger Shabunkins eat the worms off of the bottom of the pond. So far, I haven't seen any dead worm rotting on the bottom.

Hi there..
New to the forum. I live in the NW on Whidbey Island. Have a new pond, 300 gallons and have been amazed at how many worms I get in my pond.
Just added 3 comets yesterday and this morning they are all still there! Put a big rock on the bottom and they are hiding under it this morning. Will try and feed them this afternoon.

Hi and welcome,

I live in Tacoma. I also have the same problem. The difference might be here is, three of my Shubunkins are about seven inches long now and they eat the worms that lay on the bottom very long.

In the mean time purchase a three foot long (as seen on TV) gripper and pick the worms out that are dead.

Earthworms are a great treat for the fish. Unless the fish can't keep up with the worm buffet then they will become a problem and should be removed. My pond is raised so I don't have that problem, but I do throw them into the occasionally.

Thanks....I just noticed that since I added the goldfish there are no more worms so they must be supplementing their diet with them! Still not sure how much to feed so I put a bit of the discs in, turn off the pump for an hr and when I come back sure enough most if not all is gone. I do this 2x a day.

I seldom have to remove any worms. When I do they are the ones that manage to slither over and into the filter reservor that is at ground level like the pond.
