We were moving my son into his college apartment yesterday [he's a junior], and I was staring blankly at his furnishings, fighting back tears [he's my only child], remembering him as a newborn, toddler, etc., when my gaze landed and focused on his mattress.......it was his original "big boy" mattress. And it was at that point that my brain kicked into "maternal-survival" mode. All of a sudden, I wasn't looking at my little boy's mattress -- I was looking through a microscope and seeing all kinds of pond microbes... Funny how that happens.
