Dried up plant matter of some kind. My first thought was sphagnum moss, but closer look at pictures says no.

Upon closer inspection I think that the strings are braided like cord of some kind. And the mat appears to be squarish...

Okay, I just looked up dried moss and that‘s what I think it is...but why would it be hidden? Oh come on GBBUDD...just a little hint...maybe “getting warmer”

Last year I tried an experiment. mainly out of curiosity in being a new bog owner and I set up Papyrus on top of an aquablox. no stone no nothing just dangeling in the water but protected from the fish . so that photo is just roots a 27x16x17.5 aquablox was completely fled by 4 papyrus. And anyone who questions the benefit of a bog over a sponge filter etc theres the sponge but it is alive and absorbing all the bad stuff in our pods. if you look close you can see tge imprint from the aquablox
