My neighbour had a new pond dug in her garden. It contains fish and waterlilies, at this stage. However we found this creature sitting at the edge. It can move with a black sucker like end. I did wonder if it was a snail with some type of growth on its shell. We have taken it out of the pond in case it could endanger the fish.
Does anyone know what it could be?

Perhaps some sort of caterpillar larva? Can't tell how large it is from your image but that is my guess since it was not underwater and in a freshwater environment.

It was found at the edge of the pond, but seems to live happily in water. We put it in a glass jar with pond water and vegetation. It can climb up the side of the jar. It is about the size of a golf ball, about 6cm across.
