what are the factors to consider if you want to position an external pump below ground to hide it better?

i notice some external pumps, depending on the website, mention that a particular pump can be set up this way, but i can't tell if that's because there is something special about that pump or if it can be done with any external pump as long as it's done correctly.

The main thing would be to make sure rain water etc can't fill up the hole and drown your pump. Also you want it to have air flow otherwise it would be too hot.
You also need to be able to get to it, to clean the leaf basket etc.

In our area we need to be able to pull it once it starts freezing here, so access is a necessary.
