Plant 3 gallon pot with say, Iris laevigata and parrots feather, set them with a few inches of water over the pot, allow them to root in good and solid.

Given some months of good growing, the plants will become buoyant enough to float the weight of the pot and become a free floating, very natural island.

The plants out growing the pot will have feathery roots masking the original pot, the foliage will give all year round interest with a blast of blooms in Spring. The fish will relish the shade and cover all year round

I made a nice floating island, the heron came and used it as his landing spot to fish, floating island now gone. If you have heron's make it small enough to discourage the bird from landing.

Used 1/2 inch stryrofoam board, cut out holes for the plants to grow in, some just stuck in holes, some in small pots put in the holes. Thought it would be unstable enough to keep the bird off.......................wrong!

Looks good. Did you use black foam or paint the yellow stuff black? Do you have holes in the bottom to keep the soil constantly moist?
