Fuzzy cat tail, the plant

I'm new to this site. I do have a question maybe someone could answer for me. I just moved into a new house. In the yard is a pretty big fuzzy cat tail plant. This plant was not cut back in the fall. My question is should I leave it as is or trim it back now.

I take it's in a pond? If so is it a mud bottom pond. They can take over unless it is in a pot in a rubber lined pond.
