Good place to buy "starter" Koi

I spend that past year building a pond. It's ready for fish, but I would prefer not to put larger, expensive Koi in it until I gain some confidence in its operation. I definitely want to start with small Koi as I hope they will grow large.

I've seen stores online that sell 12 assorted small Koi for x dollars. I am unfamiliar with the color patterns and really don't know what to look for. Also don't know who is reputable and who is not. I've seen Shuboken (spelling?) listed as Koi and other species which I believe are not Koi.

Any recommendations for good starter packages?

Thanks!

Check your local Craigslist. There may be someone in your area that has small koi for sale and you can check them out first. I just rehomed 75 koi thru there.

I got my koi from a garden center/ fish store. They are doing great. I have a relatively decent size pond and should see growth shortly. Plus they will be coming inside for the winter.

I use NextDayKoi. Beautiful fish and I've never had a problem. I have a very active wildlife here, so I have to buy fish every now and then. Usually in the spring I add a few.
