My wife and I recently bought a house where we found an empty preformed liner. We had never planned on owning a pond but gave it a try. We started with a few .27$ Comets. Over the last few months we have battled back green water and learned all about the nitrogen cycle. We added 2 small Koi after the water became stable. Our agreed goal was to learn as much as we could about pond life and caring for fish before we made the leap to a large pond. Our little guys are over wintering very well and we haven’t lost a fish yet, although my wife did wake up to an egret gazing into our pond today. Early spring we will begin our build on the new pond. I can’t believe how much knowledge is located in these forums and how helpful everyone is to one another. I plan on DIYing as much as possible and every question that has come to mind I’ve found great answers to. I thank everyone in advance for all the excellent help I know I’ll receive.

Thanks,
Josh

It's nice you will be able to enjoy your pond for longer .I'm glad I have never seen an egret I have to admit I guess it is to cold here in VA .I found pond pumps at harbor freight for 22 dollars for 1268 gph and I own several of there pumps never had a problem yet and for fish food I use pet mountain and I know they ship from California almost 7 pound bag for 33 dollars and I use lava rock in my filters .I have had no problems yet and this pond has been here 5 years although I first built it smaller and decided to make it bigger and ended up taking 1 side apart to expand it .I am just going to try several ideas I found here so can't wait for summer well I guess spring has to come first .I had to block part of the pond because momma deers bring there babies here and they like to drink from the pond so I ended up giving them a cow trough I bought and fill with water everyday even in the winter .
