That kind of data loss hurts. It is so important to have back-up for all files.
How did this happen? Was your old hard drive fried?

Unless the hard drive was destroyed or you already physically got rid of the computer, you should be able to pull the photos off your old hard drive. Hard drives themselves can be relocated from an old computer to a new one, and computer stores know how to retrieve data from even severely damages HDDs. That can be pricey, but if what you want is important enough, it could be worth trying if necessary. I hope retrieval is possible. I had a laptop stolen about six years ago--my backup thumbdrive happened to be in the laptop bag with it because I was set to transfer files to my work computer, so my backup was stolen, too. Nightmare. I feel your pain.

I feel for you on this one, Lou. I lost a lot of great photos and music once two. There are ways you can physically backup your hard drive, but you have to remember to do so. I now use a product called Carbonite (https://www.carbonite.com/). Reasonably priced. Install the program and it automatically backs up your hard drive to a cloud server. New pics, docs, etc. are back up moments after you put them on your computer. If you accidentally delete something from your computer or "lose" your data, it is very easy to restore your backup and /or move it to a new computer. Check it out so it doesn't happen again.

So sorry to hear @Big Lou . That's a bummer!

We use Backblaze for cloud back up and I back photos up to an external hard drive as well. My son the computer scientist, when asked how many forms of back up does one need, will always reply "one more than you have".

So sorry Lou and hope people will find some of your photo's for you.
I actually had forgotten my pond presentation here on PF so I was able to recover many, many treasured snaps. Hoping to find the very first years when the pond was so primitive. I will post a series on the take out when I feel better. Thanks my friend.

That's great news! One good reason to share photos on the internet! I look forward to seeing your series!

I forgot that all of ours are also uploaded to iCloud, so there's another back up that we have.

Sorry for you're loss. I've lost many pics in a similar way, didn't think I'd miss them as much as I do, they survive as images only in my mind.
