I have noticed that my Matsuba (I think anyway) koi has flaps of black skin in front of his eyes.. It is kind of cute when he comes up to eat, looks like eye lashes, sort of... This is normal, right? I mean they are big and swish around in the water......

Sounds like a butterfly mats. Are the fins longer than your other koi?

LOL Very good!!! Yes he is a butterfly, they are cute, I just didn't notice them until my cousing came over and that was her favorite fish, then she saw the black flappy things and just loved it!
Yes, butterflys have the skin flaps. Sounds like yours just has some added eyeliner which makes them stand out a bit more.

much bigger!! Half the time I can't see his eyes!! They are so funny, if my pond water did not have a green color I would try to get a picture, it is too cute. I think he is kind of ugly, not my favorite fish at all, but I do like the fluttery skin thingies.. LOL
