Good to see you back. I am sorry about your koi. I lost two this winter and one comet. All three were the smallest of all my fish, the water tests were fine, and no visible sign of anything wrong. They were buried under my rose bushes.

I am keeping my fingers crossed your weather warms up.

Lol I believe the site just recently changed. I got an email about it and it reminded me how long I've been away too. I really like the hawk pics, I wish they would get that close but here they mostly canvas the highways looking for food. And also fairly certain they (along with the herons) are further south visiting you guys now. Sorry to hear about the fish and I must say your wife gave it a better send off than mine would have. :) good luck with warmer weather, we just finally got consistently above zero in the last week here.

On Sunday evening I decided to burn one of my small grasses down, it was only about 2' tall and 6" diameter so nothing major. Before I light it my wife says don't you think you should get the garden hose, and I reply no it will just be over in a few seconds. So I go ahead and light it, it goes up in seconds and then out of nowhere comes a strong wind and blows the flame over to a dead mum and it goes up, at this point I run over to get the lid to my fire pit to smother it out (I usually have this next to me but didn't this time). After the mum goes up it begins to light my pine straw on fire and begins to spread, at this point I am yelling for my wife who went to the garage to put up the tools I was using right before I lit it. She finally comes running to the backyard thinking the dog had gotten out of the fence. She comes around and sees quite a fire I yell to her to get a bucket because the water is not turned on outside yet. I run downstairs to quickly turn the water on so I can get the hose. I do this and run back outside to see my wife nowhere in sight, then she comes out of the house with a bucket of water. I am at this point yelling at her where she has been. She says that she was filling the bucket up with water in the house since the hose wasn't on. I grab the bucket out of her hand throw it on the flame then run to the pond and begin to fill buckets up throwing it on the fire. She gets the hose hooked up and turned on and we put out the fire. After it is all out I begin to laugh at my wife going in the house to fill up her bucket when she has a 3000 gallon pond 10' away from where the fire was. I have to say for about 3 minutes I was a bit concerned that the fire was going to burn the entire hill side. I guess next time I should listen to my wife and have the hose ready. Now it looks like I did a controlled burn in my backyard as a 8x10 area is charred. Oh well I just told my wife it was just like nature does, where it burns itself to start new life over so we shall see what grows out of this almost disaster.

LOL JW he would be getting lucky with just that. Glad you caught it before it got out of control. I grew up on a dozen acres and occasionally my dad would try to get rid of some areas on the hillside with "controlled burns", he would have fire lines and all but the fire department was called at least once. Instead of burning I just break out the machete and then burn the chopped off remains in the fire pit. :) but out of control fires is why I decided to stop cutting up my christmas tree and burning it in my fire pit, could only do it on a windless day and then the fire pit would sit useless until I got one.

How long after this happened did she smack you upside the head
She did come up to me afterwards and say "now should I say told you so, you should have listened to safety mom". I always call her safety mom b/c she is always looking at things I am about to do and say that doesn't look very safe or don't let your dog do that it could be dangerous. I am a big risk taker but for now on when it comes to burning the grass I will be a bit more cautious. :)

geeze sounds like one of those do it all wrong skits they show on comedy shows on TV .I guess it will be a good story to tell people when you are sitting around the fire pit looking at the fire as you start to laugh about it all .People will say what are you laughing about and you get to tell the story :)

I loved all the stories reported here. So sorry to hear about your koi, and man she was a big one, T'Mann. Since you only had the 3 koi, does that mean you never have babies each year? Or, maybe all 3 of your koi are/were female ...
Those are some great photos, can't believe a heron was at your pond when it was covered with snow. Stupid bird ... LOL That small hawk was really neat, too, standing on the ice.
I think everyone should report their little "I told you so" stories. :)

My koi never had babies, they may be all female not sure. Even my goldfish do not seem to reproduce anymore, not sure if they are eating their own or what.

T-mann- I lit off some ornamental grass the other day as it has over run my garden. The wind was calm until I lit off the 3rd clump and within seconds the entire flower bed was blazing! Had the hose and got it put out so will be cutting the rest down before burning! Maybe should burn the tops now whole the ground is covered with snow.
