What is wrong with string algae?

It can kill plants .I am not sure one of my lilies made it as it was choked out with string algae

String algae makes a good mechanical filter in a stream or waterfall and is easy to remove by hand when full of dirt

I leave some string in my small slow water preform ponds. The tads and other critters love to live in it.
