Yes, it will be sad, but maybe there's a chance that he/she will nest close to you in the future. I would live in a shack if I could witness this in my yard!
I get that totally! I was squealing like a little kid this morning when I first saw it! But they have to move out of the parents range, no competing with the ones that raised you :)

I didn't know that they ate plants or was it just testing it out?
Beats me! I was NOT expecting that! But being as this is a good year for hyacinths I was okay with it taking one off. Maybe one day it will realize that frogs live out there too.

Yesterday I became convinced that the owlet may have moved along as the adults became much more active - hunting during the day and calling to one another. Plus the owlet's distinctive whistle was absent. I think they may have avoided calling much while the owlet was around to minimize attention. Last evening one was calling while sitting at or near the pond (naturally I went out the wrong door) and then this morning I spotted one inspecting the bog. Note the Brown Thrasher on the gate watching the owl's every move.

In the middle of the night, I woke up and turned on the back yard light to see ... a yellow crowned night heron checking for stray frogs. All the fish are fine!
Never seen one of those. i did see i had a green night heron hanging around but the only picture i got was horrid.

There are many feral cats on our hill, and most of them use our dished basalt rock for drinking daily. Other times, they come right up and drink from the pond waterfalls. In exchange, we have no mice!
