i haven't taken the pump apart yet. a pondmaster mag pump burnt out last night after a power failure caused it to lose it's prime. not sure how long it ran without water. i'm hoping it is an impeller issue. any opinions on what i may find?

I have never heard of a mag-drive pump losing its prime. Was this pump located above water level? I would pull the current impeller and examine it for excessive wear and scratches. Sounds like it was ready to fail anyway and just froze up when you lost power/

it's disconcerting about the obvious things i miss. with the configuration i had, a check valve at a minimum would of been wise along with an inexpensive power outtage alarm. i talked to pondmaster. the pump is done. so i'm thinking i take a rigid container, line with epdm so i can attach it to the pond epdm and bury it next to the pond so it fills with water and put the pump in there. then have the intake hose go down into the pond instead of sucking water near the top?

If your preference is mag-drive pumps, you can't go wrong with a Pondmaster. This company was one of the pioneers in the field of mag-drive pumps.
This is a submersible pump, not for out-of-pond use and, like most mag-drives, rapidly loses 'Oomph' as head value increases.
Nonetheless, overall , Yes......a good reliable pump.
