When buying your koi from a private owner here are a few rules of thumb that you must stick to otherwise it may end up with you loosing more than you purchaced.

Take a good look at not only the koi you are there to buy from them but also at the other koi in the pond as one heck of a lot can be learned from observing the koi whilst in situ then ask yourself the followng questions

1) Is the koi swimming well and not sitting on the bottom.
2)Are there any other koi just sitting around on the...

It's always a good idea to ask about prior (or current) health conditions when purchasing fish or any animal for that matter. Although if buying from a pet store it's highly unlikely you will get much info.

Yes sadly thats very true Maria her we are lucky we dont have much in the way of pets stores yet so we still have the Tropical fish shops , koi dealerships I doubt will ever fall into the ownership of a petstore .
