How long should a pond pump last , in general ?

The right pump for the right job is needed to last for years . if you have a low head pump and throw a ton of head at it it will burn out prematurely.
don't use a trash pump and have lots of organics slip in the pond and you'll burn out.
underwater warehouse and Aquascapes will both give you recommendations if you call and ask

Also depends on whether you are talking about submersible pumps or external pumps. Generally speaking submersibles do not last as long as externals. On the plus side submersibles do not cost as much upfront but usually have higher energy costs than externals. Pros and cons to everything.

Mine are all submersible's and I like the Laguna brand for the lower energy costs.
