Replanting a water lily?

as a little aside, when I emptied my pond some 6 weeks ago, I pulled out a very large lilly basket full of muck and roots and rocks I replanted the lilly pads and the nearly empty basket was laying in the back of my garden. Yesterday I saw lillypads growing on what is basically a compost heap. Turns out there where still lilly pads in there, roots as thick as my arm. It has pretty much not rained here in 6 weeks, everything is completely dry. They sure are hardy!

I have one tuber per pan. I have a few tiny starts that are doubled up in a pan, will separate once they get going.

I start them in shallow water, maybe 8 inches above the top of pan, after it starts growing leaves I put the lily lower in the water, I have some at a depth of around 1.5 feet now.

It is my walk in area, just an area the width of the pond about a foot deep, then drops to 2 feet. The fish don't hang out there at all. I also have some fishless ponds in the stream, warm and shallow.

You could put them on upside down pots, milk crates etc, I find they start better being shallow esp if they are real small which some of mine where. Sent to me by a friend.

The ones from last year where in 2.5 feet water for the winter, and where growing when I pulled them to shallower water.

I know I'm a bit late on this, but just wanted to say that if you place a young lily too deep too soon, they will often just rot. John

I put mine in any container with holes and anchor it with large rocks. No dirt, gravel or anything else. Right now they are so big the leaves are pushing each other out of the water. The only fertilizer is provided by the Koi. Oh and lots of flowers.
