Alas, I don't think my little hand-dug pond has much of a chance against the ones built with excavators and thousands of dollars to buy rocks. Next time you talk with the Aquascape folks, ask them to make a new category for DIY sans-machines. That might give the rest of us a chance! ;-)

Not so my friend the first diy winner was a hand dug pond and that was a small pond . And to be perfectly honest doesn't have half the character that your does

I think one reason I built the pond is that gives me a great excuse to never leave the house.

I love my pond which my brothers and dad pitched in and built me about 30 years ago. It’s the best gift they ever gave me. It also reminds me of my dad and a brother who have since died. It’s above ground between the house and garage. I think that has helped protect it from the elements. The plants were just returned to it a few weeks ago. It was redesigned two years ago and the waterfall was moved to a different corner and the waterfall is more powerful. A skimmer was added and it has been a big help. There’s also a fountain. The light color can be changed with a clicker. I turn off the lights at bedtime so the raccoons can’t see the fish as easily. When it was redesigned, the center of it was also dug another foot deeper to help the fish get away from raccoons.

We haven’t installed the under water lights yet… wondering if anyone has noticed any associated issues with nocturnal predators and fish potentially being drawn to illuminated waters?

I turn my lights off at bedtime for that reason. The guy who cleans the pond agreed that’s a good idea. You can get lights that are on a timer, too.
