something ate my gorgeous lily bud!

Ack! Just as a big fat bud was about to bloom, something ate half the bud. I don't have fish in my pond, and this has never happened before. I have wild ducks (Mallards); do you think a duck did it? Anything I can do to prevent this from happening again?

I've had chipmunks do that. They sit on the pads and chew up the buds.

Seriously? Do chipmunks swim? This lily is out in the middle of the pond. Also, we don't have chipmunks here, just squirrels.
