Spillway off a gravity filter?

Hello,
I have a Oase screenmatic 60,000 filter that is pump fed and currently drains back into the pond via gravity.
I want a waterfall rather than the simple pipe return that i have now. I like the idea of a spillway box.

Would a spillway box waterfall work by just gravity fed water from my Oase screenmatic filter that is placed at a higher level than the spillway box? I think yes that it should but cannot see any diagram or picture anywhere for such a set up.

That link is for a waterfall spillway which would definitely work.
