I ended up using a shop vac with a pump and it did a pretty decent job!

Explain how you did that - it looks good!

I used I 16 gallon shop vac with a built in pump. The pump drains the dirty water while the vac is in use. Every 5 minutes or so, I would have to pause to give the pump time to catch up, since it vacuums water in faster than it pumps water out. It was very satisfying to see all that gunk disappear. I intentionally left some behind to keep the bacterial colonies.

What kind of shop vac is this? I've never seen anything like that! (Says the girl who knows zero about shop vacs - shopping, yes. Vacuuming, yes. Shop vacs - not so much!)

I don’t know that much either, but here is what it looks like. I ordered it from amazon. It works like a standard shop vac for most jobs but has the ability to be a pump vac or a blower as well.
