I live in Dane Co, so not the true deep freeze of the North, but still pretty frigid in January.

It would definitely be better pond design if the whole run from waterfall down to skimmer was downhill.
And LOL, if I'm the only person on the board who has to clear water lines...

Gravity sucks: in this case, only literally if you plan well, lol! :banghead:

I used the bubble wrap in skimmer box idea today.

Made two bubble wrap compression chambers.

Took three drawstring kitchen trash bags, put 21lbs of free weights in bottom of bags.

Then I added a bag with a bunch of bubble wrap, tied all drawstrings shut. (Two sets of these)

The 21lbs weight was not enough to sink contraption totally, but it did achieve a kind of neutral buoyancy, so I could sink with rocks.

Your skimmer must be a lot bigger than mine! Mine is a pool skimmer I can fill it with just one kitchen garbage bag and weigh it down with some rocks.

I appreciate the tip, opening the pond to a cracked skimmer box a few years ago was not my favorite thing.
Now if my aerator can survive the subzero winter here I'm set.

I don't use a aerator, I put in the pond breather and in the shallow end of the big pond I put in a small pump to keep some ice free area for the birds.
