The ice is pretty thick, at least 4" in the koi pond on the opposite end from where it is open. It's amazing to me how well the moving water has kept it open. I think the magic temperature is 15 or under, when moving water needs some help. Or, maybe it's lower than that if you don't have wind, but for me and my winds, seems like under 15 or so, the heaters need to be on at night. Only have used them for a total of 2.5 days so far, so I'm happy! Not nearly as cold a winter so far ... although we have quite a long ways to go until we are in the clear. Usually very cold only happens in Jan. and Feb., and since we are halfway through Jan, I'm stepping out on a limb!

I LOVE my fairy stones from you, Sissy! Thanks again. Oh, and the other stones you have sent me along they way. They are in my "special stones" jar. :) I love collecting stones. The fairy stones are easy to pick out, but the others I collect, they have memories, but I tend to forget which memory goes with which stone around the pond, but that doesn't matter. They are all special!
Yes, the moving water is wearing away at the ice, but when the temps went down to single digits a week ago, the pond was froze over solid on top. The bog was still running, I could hear it, as well as the stream. So, I melted the ice in front of the stream, thinking if I can heat the water as it comes out of the stream, that may circulate it around the pond. Must have worked ... or just the ground not being frozen too deep is helping, too. :)

My pond seems to only freeze when it is windy out and cold .Like last night 27 degrees no wind no ice .Glad you like the rocks ce .All mine have special memories also .I found out the seeds from my cold hardy palms need to dry out and planted 12 of them and 9 came up .I used rooting hormone to get them started .I soaked them in water and then coated them with the rooting hormone and planted them and put them in a warm dark spot and then put them in the sun and they came up I was surprised they even did anything after failing growing them from seeds 5 times

Rain just started up. Was out walking today and a lady stopped and asked if I had seen a small kangaroo! Guess he escaped from the kangaroo farm down the road. He's been missing for a week now. Hope they find the little fella.

Oh man we made it up to 39 degrees Fahrenheit today!! Weather was just lovely and little Rio ran and ran all afternoon after the big dogs and chased them all around the yard!

CE looked at your beautiful video again, reminds me of "Home on the Range"! That bog has some nice sedges and probably keeps the water warmer too!

It is 9 pm and still 39 degrees and got some work done in the basement and then came up and sister called her mother in law is in hospital and they do not expect her to make it .She kept saying she wanted to go so she could be with her hubby and her daughter who are in heaven .She said she was tired .She has had bad health problems for years now .:(I guess you get to a point in life where the pain is not worth it all .Sad to say .So will sit by the phone in case they need me .Right now the family is there standing by ,hardest thing for them .

The tall stuff in the bog is mainly cattails, but there are those skinny ones, too. Nothing like your tall yellow sedge or whatever you call it, Colleen. All the dead stuff is the penny wart. I'd like to try to thin that stuff out, but seems either you have it, or you don't. LOL I've kept it out of the koi bog, but it has taken over the goldfish bog. May try to pull out as much as possible when things thaw out, and see how much I can keep it under control. It's great for soaking up the nutrients, I'm sure, just would like to see other things grow in there, too.
