algae is a plant in a way and is doing it's job cleaning the pond water of excess nutrients .I always say aeration is our friend
I was under the impression that algae removes oxygen from the water thus hurting the fish?

Welcome @Annee ! Looks like you found the GPF and are reading some old threads - great way to learn, but you won't always get replies from the original poster.

No, algae won't remove oxygen from the water. Algae is completely natural and won't harm a pond or the fish that live in it. In fact, every healthy pond has algae as part of the complete eco-system. Algae will in fact remove nutrients from the pond that will otherwise harm the fish so it is a plus, not a minus. The challenge is to get a pond balanced so you don't have an overgrowth of algae.

Do you have a pond? Or are you thinking of building one? If you're a pond owner now we'd love to see pictures!
