I don't think so - I've always called carpet algae the stuff that clings to the rocks and is short. String algae is the long flowing stuff that you see in streams and waterfalls.

There are so many different types of algae, both those terms are used interchangeably.
All algae is good but when the growth gets out of hand, then it's a problem.

I have what looks like string algae, but its only 1/4-1/2 inch long.... All over the bottom and sides....and I have to clean my pump frequently or it'll obstruct the intake.

That's not too bad, it could be the periphyton you are seeing. Periphyton is a matrix of nutrients, bacteria and algae that is the main filter for your pond.
Fish will feed off that layer, so don't feed your fish unless there's nothing left. (if you have fish)
If the algae is clogging your pump intake, that's an indication that the filtration setup isn't keeping up.
Depends on how often you are having to clean the intake.

sounds like there's no problem with the pond. 1/4 hairs growing on everything in a pond is a HEALTHY pond get a couple koi and don't feed them they will probably grow quickly.
