many alternatives it depends on need and design , u can use mosquito net then battling , u can search for wider sponges , something like matala or other type of sponges , all will work as media , for bio media , cheapest easiest to get is fine gravel

The Savio skimmer's design is such that it requires a bracket to hold the filter pad/ Not all filter media will work.

All of which hjas absolutely nothing to do with conifer needles clogging the filter. They will clog any filter media!!

I finally pulled out that bracket and threw it away. I tired putting polyester batting in the leaf basket and holding it in place with wire ties, but it breaks down really fast and then clogs the pump. I have this green plastic stuff from Savio that looks like 1/4" ribbon. It works great in my filter box I wonder how it would work int the skimmer? It is easy to clean but gets very heavy when is is dirty like right now!

IDK. But I think that type of media is intended more for biological filtration.

I used Springflow in my Savio waterfall but I packed my Savio skimmer with the blue Filtreate material, the cut your own air filter material , as Mathis said both are strictly bio filter media
