@Davecave56 Hello and welcome. I don’t think we have enough information to be able to answer your question. Why not post some pictures of your fish and tell us what you have in your pond. Are they goldfish?

I don't doubt the truth of your explanation and we always welcome all educational information. It sure seems like very sound information too, but I have some questions.

I'm wondering if you are applying this to all black or black/olive bellied fish including those that are born in many of our ponds where black moors are not present.
I have koi and various goldfish, comets, shubunkin in my pond. There are at least half a dozen black fish that are offspring. Some have the olive or golden bellies, some not. Some have long beautiful flowing fins, some not.

Also, there have been many members here that had black fish that later turned colorful.

Then there's the popular claim that these are goldfish/koi hybrids that are sterile, like most hybrids. These claims are all incorrect?

So, are there different types of black colored fish or are you saying there's some type of black moor gene carried by our goldfish or koi?

Again, not doubting your information, but are you possibly painting with too large of a brush by including all these black colored fish in your statement?

Thanks again for the history of the black moor breeding.
Extreme apologies, I only read this, what is it, four years later.

No I'm only talking about these specific fish as pictured above.

Many goldfish have unstable black which can turn brassy or red later on. I personaly have never had an all black goldfish popping up in my pond spawnings. Dark shubunkins with red or white here and there yes. But usualy if they are late to colour up they remain a sort of olive green darker on top, all eventualy turn orange/red, never had an olive/dark adult like the wild Carassius auratus which they sell as food fish live in markets, these do have an almost black back.
Goldfish that have been bred specificaly to be black like Moors and some Ranchu in my experience often turn brassy or brown (not unattractive) or silverish belly up rather than red/orange. If they aren't stable blacks or not a pure strain of Moor for example they turn red and black like butterfly goldfish. In Koi there is a black bred to be black, the Karasu apparently also good luck to have one of those, these often have red orange or brassy bellies. There are recently also brown and white ranchu in our markets which I find very nice, they look antique somehow also a strain of brown (copper) and white celestials.

Far as I know and I've had my black fish (same as that pictured here) for six maybe seven years, they haven't faded or changed to red but have remained pretty much solid black no sign of barbles yet but interestingly nor of any spawn, either they're all males or I stand corrected and they are infertile hybrids. Some do develop silvery bellies as I saw that in the shops when selecting but the black seems pretty stable on the backs of all of them so maybe Moor crossed with the wild food fish.

I would be interested if the OP got their fish and how they turned out?
