@Gemma you can put a floating tube ring in the pond and throw the pellets in there as then the skimmer can't suck them up.
I made one once and just used whatever I had on hand to connect the two ends together. I tied it to one place in the pond so it could not float away.

That was going to be my next step, but look who came up to eat tonight

That is a gorgeous fish @Gemma looks like a polished steel grey. Will it change color as it grows do you think?

I have no idea!

I wanted a Chagoi or a Soragoi but I couldn't settle on a color so I got the Oshiba which is a blend of the other two....I wonder if it grows as large as them.
They are not very showy as far as color, but the scales of these fish are just awesome!

@Gemma it's the scales that make that fish lovely. I had to head to Google to look them up after I saw yours.

I worry that they have nothing to eat in a brand new pond,
I would pull some plants from your other pond with algae etc on them. Lilies, grasses anything that will be under water. Place them in the new pond to give the fish something to nibble on all winter. I watched my fish (when I had the camera running) eating on the plants all winter. They nibble.

Remove them next spring. The new pond is too naked right now.

I prefer Metallic koi! The oshiba is not metallic, but I love the scales and with the added GinRin is just as showy as the metallic fish.

My personal preference, I like the GinRin on fish that are NOT metallic, it really brings the fish up to the same level of the metallic bright and shiny fish....but I do not like the GinRin on metallic fish, I think it actually takes away from them....aside from the Platinum that still looks good in a GinRin version due to the lack of color I think, again just my personal preference.

I have no clue why I did not ask or pay attention to what type of koi I was getting the day I purchased them. I was really just getting the ones I liked. I have one almost identical to your koi with the yellow head. I was thinking they were domestic koi and would be a little smaller so I could fit a few more in my pond, but however when I said as much in the store when getting the last three, the owner gave me a funny look and told me her koi were Japan imports. I think I may have insulted her.

I've had my pond going on 17yrs, and only 2 yrs ago I learned of the different kinds of koi available on the market.
I used to think getting a shiny (metallic ) koi was pure luck:D , now that I know so much more, and can find a specific looking fish, I've become so selective when buying

I will send you a list of all my plants (I have a lot) for you to chose from, for next Spring!View attachment 116590

Thank you every one for participating, it was fun!
@Gemma I would love some plants if you have some to spare in the spring. So I actually spend quite a bit of time coming up with this estimate. I'm competitive :) Since I didn't have measurements, I looked at all of your pictures and counted the cinder blocks (since I know the dimensions of them). I got the length, width, and height. After converting to gallons, I then subtracted 40% off that number to account for it not being square, the divider in the middle and rock displacement to come up with my estimate.

Your pond is looking great! We have been getting a ton of rain here along with other things that had priority, so I haven't been able to work on my pond much. I hope to get back to it next week.

Wow @Rex I had no idea you had put in all that work to reach your estimate, you sure deserved to win!
I will pm you a list of what I can send you.
Thank you for playing and good luck with your pond, I know exactly how frustrating it is to have to work around the weather.

@Rex - you used MATH?! That might have been against the rules... ;) I don't ever want to compete against you in one of those "guess how many jelly beans are in the jar" contests!

How is the new pond doing?
Doing ok I guess but I'm bummed out cause we didn't get to finish it. It got too cold and raining, we'll resume working at it next Spring.
The new pump only lasted 4 days so I've been running the pond on a 6000gph pump I kept for backup, the broken pump got sent back to manufactures (3yrs warranty) and I have no idea when I'll see it again. the broken pump is 9200gph but it cost less to run and the waterfall looks so much nicer, I want my pump back!

The 5 little fish are swimming around together it's so cute! I named the Hi Utsuri butterfly "Bumblebee" (I'm sure I'm not the only one) The Blue Matsuba butterfly is "BlueBell", the Aka Hajiro (or Benigoi) is "Ruby" and the other two I have no idea...one is the Oshiba I could call it "Shiba" and the smallest one is a Kujaku, i could call it "Kujo" but what if it turns out to be a wuss? I think I better wait on naming those 2 :D

What brand was that pump? Internal or external? Glad you had a good warranty on it! Sorry you don't get to play outside w/your new pond more. Will they fix your pump or send a new one? Should not take that long if they just send another one.

Glad the little fish are doing well!

I picked up bronze/ gold butterfly bout 20" long now and named him Fin Diesel due to the fish being very aggressive at feeding time it always charged in and beat everyone else at the food. Ends up fin is a girl and that's ok she would make Vin Diesel proud.

Yes - do tell! What kind of pump fails after 4 days? Although I guess if it was defective it makes sense it would fail early on. But that's sure disappointing after all your hard work!

Thanks! That's the hardest part to have new fish and can't even feed them to bound with them....thought I'd have at least 3 more weeks of good warmer weather when I purchased them, but no!
The pump is a Tidalwave 9200gph submersible (goes in the skimmer box) We toke it back to the supplier and he sent it back to be evaluated by the manufactures they either fix it or replace it depending on what's wrong with it.

That's funny, and cute! :)
Some fish I name cause of their appearance and others their personality ..I had a baby kin Kikokuryu that hid for 5 or 6 months, we called him Cave Dweller cause that's all we knew he did, now he's too big to hide so his name changed to Shy Dragon and it really suits him because he is very very skittish

That's a pet peeve of mine - I think an expensive piece of equipment that fails that soon should be replaced ASAP, no questions asked. But that's just one girl's opinion!
I would not except a refurbished PUMP that died after 4 days. now I understand a submersible could have sucked in just about anything but I would be less then a QUIET customer. And they can certainly see easy enough if the pump had sucked in some garbage

The warranty states fix, or replace so there isn't much that I can do at this point....
The 6000gph pump I'm using as backup, I bought last Fall and also only lasted a few month (different brand different seller), it was sent back and discovered water was getting into it, I'm not sure if it was fixed or replaced, but we were given a temporary pump to use while waiting for ours
I'm thinking they may have replaced a defective part and sent it back to us, I'm just crossing my fingers that it keeps on working I paid close to 700 for it, it's a shame that for that price they still sell you junk.
