hmmm a penny each .We build ponds but there is no way to know what works and what doesn't .What works for one person does not always work for everyone .Weather plays into it and water conditions like rain and sun and hot and cold all take a part in the pond .Things like pollen and leaves can really drive a pond nuts and the owner of the pond also .I think we will all need straight jackets if we really let it get to us .Try and fail try again .There is no magical answer ,no magicians and no miracle to add to the pond ,and if some one does find something you may end up getting rich .

oh and i have gutter nearly directly over the pond (metal roof) i could easily install a downspout or rain barrel to fill the pond..

There is a lot of debate about roof water for a pond. I use mine, we are very rural. Others would never use roof water. So far my fish are fine, actually doing great.
