Is the sponge in my pump a prefilter?

Not sure if this is the correct area to post this, but I’d read that having a prefilter when you have a bog is not a good thing, but having something to protect your pump is definitely necessary. So is the little sponge inside my pump a prefilter or necessary protection for my pump? I don’t want to starve my bog but I also don’t want to wreck my pump!

I have a coarse sponge on my small bog filter pump, keeps leaves and larger debris from plugging the intake. As you said, have to keep the pump running. Depends on the type/size of pump and if it can handle solids.
