I don't treat what he says as gospel as I have told eric some things he said is wrong .When you don't eat meat you need vitamins and mine are not over the counter .Only reason i am critical of this is the type fish and no mention of water temps. and sunlight and conditions .I raise koi and goldfish .I have yet to see a food that is pure whatever .If I was in a bubble I would then be safe ,I choose not to be in a bubble and live .There are no foods out there 100% pure or safe from the air and water and what it carries .That is the main reason I test my well water often .There are all kinds of stuff in the ground .I will not drink bottled water either I saw the tests on them .That study is also almost 10 years old and you have to admit that it could be outdated and has nothing to do with a home pond .New things come on the market everyday .My husband would not be alive if was not for new updated medical .Eric is a good friend and has helped me so yes Eric is special to me .My original post was about zeolite in pond fish food not about rainbow trout food .We all buy food for our fish no matter who we are .

The linked paper reported the results of adding zeolite as a supplement in fish feed under certain controlled conditions. Water temps, sunlight or other water conditions are extraneous in that the results from both the normal feed and the zeolite enhanced feed would be equally affected. The fact that these were Trout would also have a minor effect on the meaning of the results as, although there are differences, the fact that Trout, Goldfish and Koi (Carp) are all Teleost fish means that their physiology is generally the same.
Very few scientific research projects are conducted under the framework of Garden Ponds because, frankly, in the order of things they are of minor importance when compared to commercial aquaculture/food production and its impact on the global economy.
Every step that has made forward in the understanding of how your pond works has been gleaned from myriad research papers similar to this one being discussed. If these results are to be discounted then so should all of the prior results that have given us our present understanding of pond ecology.

Regarding taking vitamins:

GNC is being investigated for adding illegal ingredients to their supplements.
There's a similar investigation going on up here in Canada.
Bottom line is that you're not getting what you are paying for.
Any additions to fish food would certainly not be regulated at all.
I used to import food from Japan Mitch they really did know what they were doing and we got spectacular results from them , one day I was a week or two away of running out so I sent off for more of this specialist koi food and got a reply back the due to the EU banning some suppliments to the food.
Any foods containing these supliments even the Billion a food specifically for the livers health and the status quo has remained ever since , we cant get the foods the Breeders originally formulated :( not fair
