What are you feeding him and how much? You could try fasting him for a few days which might help if he was constipated.

Swim bladder issues in bettas usually show up as bottom sitting or laying on their side struggling to swim to the top of the tank.

For them to be upside down is not a good sign :(

Did you check ammonia and nitrite levels?

Did he just start doing this? How long have you had him? Does he look bloated?
I am not sure when it started but sadly he has died. I checked all the water chemistry and everything was normal. A good friend of mine who works at the Georgia Aquarium said that Alpha probably had gotten an infection or injury to his swim bladder. I really appreciate the help though, thank you. I might get another one but he was the most unique of all my pets in the sense I only had one so might be hard to replace.

Thank you all for being helpful with advice and especially being kind after Alpha died. I really appreciate it and was kinda surprised myself at how attached I had become to him. I guess it is because of how long he had lived with (3 years). I think I will go look at the pet stores betta sometime later today or tomorrow and see what they have. I just think that the pet store does not treat them as well as an owner could do so to me it is not so much "replacing" one but, rather rescuing another one.

Thank you Dave. I guess you know what it is like with the koi you raise. Are there any that you have had for a long time ?
