Sissy,

Sacramento can get very hot late in the day, several days to 14 days per year over 100 degrees F, but it cools fairly dramatically at night, to as low as the mid-50s and generally no more than lower 60s in the southwest part of Sacramento. This means that the water doesn't get really warm in our area. So the depth should be okay.

Hi,

I got the Rubbermaid 150 gal stock tank situated and put together (but haven't glued) the 2" schedule 40 pvc and ran it from the tank to the pond. You can see the bottom of the tank here, from above.

Here you can see it running towards the pond. Note the wye leading to the top of the stream bed. I'll be adding either 1 or 2 ball valves to control the flow as necessary.

I bought a 4" bulkhead fitting from Sacramento Koi for the upper side of the stock tank to return water to the head end of the stream bed. I have it being "trimmed" to fit within the upper outer lip and the lower inner lip of the stock tank. I'll have pictures hopefully by this weekend of that arrangement.

More to come.

I mentioned above about the 4" bulkhead fitting I bought from Sacramento Koi. It cost about $68 which was a fraction of the price of bulkhead fittings in general which seemed to range from $108 to $225. I got back the trimmed fitting on Thursday and it looked great.

2011-12-26_12-14-53_170.jpg

The fitting is in 3 pieces, the grill, inside and outside pieces. I had the bottom of the inside pieces and the top of the outside piece trimmed to fit within the limited space on my Rubbermaid 150 gallon Stock Tank.

I put the inside piece in place and made sure before I cut the hole that both pieces would fit. Then I traced a circle with a pen to mark where I would need to cut.

After that I removed the pieces, cut the hole with my Dremel jigsaw attachment and then spread silicone sealant on the inside and outside pieces of the bulkhead fitting. Finally I screwed them together along with the grating piece and this is what I got, inside:

And outside:

Note the trimmed bottom part of the inside pieces and the trimmed top of the outside piece.

My wife found an add on Craig's List for some rock and I went over to have a look and found this:

I filled the truck bed. Boy that truck was down in back!

Unloaded at home and will begin to put in place after we get our liner, hopefully later this week.

To give a sense of scale - this was the second rock in just left of center in previous picture.

So far the back is holding out, but I'll have to get more later.

I have never seen a tank fitting like that interesting that it has a grate feature .I just got a stock tank with a built in heater from a neighbor for free and never knew they came with a built in heater .I guess with that amount of rock I would be dragging butt too ,you did get some nice ones .

Sissy,

They may use that fitting as a bottom drain, but it worked perfect for what I was looking for. I'm going to connect the outflow side to an approximately 2 foot long ABS 4" drain pipe to empty into the top of the stream. I got the thing from Sacramento Koi, the folks that make the Advantage Bead Filter/Pump combinations. They had a useful selection of pond plumbing parts.
