OK Today by the pond, whole new look, pond snowed in again.... winter storm warnings today. Currently -6 c, dropping tonight to -14c, and a low of - 22 for tomorrow.

Going to test this NEW heater that I got last year really cheap and on closing out sale, 1250 w. It is supposed to it on shelf liner "and relfect heat to pond" so instruction says. I think I will sit it on self on bricks... just in case it gets too hot.

Thermometer for pond lost in snow.... got to go find it now and place heater in pond.

Water turning to slush on top in some areas, bottom temperature near zero, ffish ffreeeezingg! Everybody ran under large plants to hide. Just the way it is every year. Don't think the green heater will cut it tonight, as it is a de-icer and it does not get very hot. Going to switch to old red cattle trough heater right away. Large amount if know chills pond quick, time for big red....

Hi Colleen,

Really enjoying your posts. I just started our first pond this past year. We're located about 1-1/2 hours NW of Calgary.
Our pond is 95% iced over now so it's probably too late to change anything, but I'll be following this thread for some tips in case a chinook comes along and loosens things up!

Today by the pond, puppies were playing around, fish were swiming in hole in the ground, and I got to get ready to take my mom downtown....

Took the green de-icer out, will test it some more later, switched to 1500 watt cattle trough heater, supposed to get down to minus 17 Celsius tonight, currently minus13 Celsius... bottom water in pond reading just above zero C.

What's the brand on that 1500 watt heater ya are using?

I've been looking for a heater that is not thermostatically controlled, which seems impossible to find. I got a in-the-wall electricity timer anyways so it is only allowed to be on when I want it on.

Huge snow storm here today and tomorrow. Temps not too bad, but we are going to get about 30 cm of snow in all. That is 1 foot. Winds are suppose to pick up later this afternoon from the North and bring windchills into the -10 to -15 celcius range. Oh well, it is November! Fish are all snug in 100 gallon rubbermade tote in garage. I can't wait until summer.....only 6 months to go!!!

Minus 22 degrees Celsius this morning, with windchill -29! One red heater for three connecting ponds, large open pockets of water can be seen....

Very nice. Where are the heaters? thought they were floaters, don't see them.

so, -22*C is like -7.6*F. How many hours does it stay that cold ?? this is what really matters. I know my farm sprinklers I can run as long as I get less than 5 hours of 25*F temps in the evenings, anymore than 5 hours then I have to turn them off.

This is nothing, can to minus 45 here. It will be cold for the next few days, should get a break in the weather by Tuesday, I hope! Heater is froze in the ice by water way so it's hard to see. I only use the one, seems to do what I need it to, never used two.
