7a here, mine died off from fish eating their roots and full sun. The ones in the shade with out fish did well. My goldfish liked their roots.

Just had a similar experience with plants in bog getting black leaves and tips and some outright dead. This included creeping jenny too. This was during a NO2 surge that had me stumped. Ammonia and all others test results were normal. I had a large number of midget larva in pond (millions) and had just added 5 shubunkins. The midges were eaten and/or hatched into white flies. So perhaps a large bio-load was not handled by the bacteria. To make a long story shorter, added Prime to lower nitrites, it took them to 0, and plants have recovered. Seems plants could be susceptible to increases in nitrites. My pond is new, only weeks old but had cycled with ammonia prior to addition of fish.
