Hi everyone,

Most of you know I am having a new pond built at my new home as per my
New home, New Pond thread.

This pond will be aprox. 2700 Gallons and I am wondering if I should even put
Koi in it. If I followed the 1 Koi per 500 Gallon rule could I have 5 Koi in my pond,
and would they be happy in that size of pond.

Please keep in mind that any fry they were to have I would either give to some
pond owners around our neighborhood and/or bring them in to our Koi
hatchery.

Any personal and/or professional opinions would be greatly appreciated as I do
not want to have koi if the environment does not suit them.

Thanks all.

With a 2700 gallon pond I feel like you could comfortably raise a good 8-12 Koi to full grown and even raise some of the young in the pond with no problem as long as you have good filtration and keep up with your water quality. I've read the 500 gallon per Koi rule too. 500 gallons for 1 large koi would be a small enclosure, 3 koi in 1500 gallons would be a nice low stocked population and very managable. Koi aren't as bad as some make them out to be, and with that size pond you should be able to enjoy them for a long time with minimal efforts. Just read up on them and understand their requirments.

Agreed! I have 5 koi in my roughly 1000-1100 gallon pond.

I know for certain that someday when they grow to be large that I may have to give some of them away to a bigger home, but that doesnt mean they can't be healthy and happy right now.

some say 1000 gallons per koi .... you just have to remember they get huge !!... but you could have a few small ones, as long as you can give them up when they become to big for your pond
