I have someone coming to finish pouring a concrete wall around the perimeter of my pond to control run off for when it rains. Should I have the liner laid prior to the concrete wall being built or does the liner get laid after the concrete wall. It will be around 2 inch high of concrete. If I pour concrete first does pond liner go over wall or how will I lay pond liner if concrete wall is at perimeter of pond? Can concrete get poured on top of liner. I would like it accessible just incase I need to make repairs to liner. Any suggestions? Thank you family.

i'd advise you do some more home work as to pond building the concrete your placing is honestly a waste of time and money. We would call what your making a bond beam. Which is great if done properly . but you can salvage this fairly easy . but it may not be as you envision.
are you planning to have stone around the pond at the edging ?

ultimately you want the rocks sitting on a shelf in the water so the liner is hidden. if you bring the liner up over that concrete and extend it a foot past the concrete it will allow you to place a stone on the shelf that is at least 6" thick fold up the liner on the outside of the rock fold it inward and back fill with soil you'll be creating the berm all the way around the pond to keep out run off and hiding the shelf and liner

Okay yes I will look up more info. I was also hoping the concrete would give the soil more stability. When it rained the soil separated from under some of the concrete cause it had all been dug and then I added to back to make shelves but it washed away with rain. I had tarp over it but it wasn’t completely covered. So I will research how to keep runoff away from pond. Thank you so much!

You should be able to build your berm out of just soil. It will be protected from erosion on one side by the liner and by plants, rocks, gravel, mulch on the other.

From the pictures, it reminds me of the “collar” that I ended up building around my pond. We have a high water table and clay soil. My goal was to allow the water level to be above ground level. It worked for us, as the collar kept the clay from shifting (bad clay!). The liner goes on top of the concrete layer. I used an angle grinder to get the concrete and all edges as smooth as possible, and used a lot of underliner between the liner and concrete. This way gave me a nice shelf level to place rocks and plants. I used 2 layers of cinder block in order to create the layer. It 100% worked and solved our problems……then we moved…..and still haven’t built that new pond:confused:

I am going to to do the berm like you mentioned. I just researched it and read how to build. Again I Appreciate the tip

very much like the drawing above but the upper block in the picture would be rocks for you the lower concrete is your concrete bond beam

Get grass growing on it that will stabilize the soil

Okay. Will do. I feel like okay I’m feeling better about this now. One other thing I’m going to start reshaping and cleaning the inside of pond to get ready to lay liner. The dirt from under the cement I laid has washed away. Since I’ve left partially uncovered through a few rain spells and water seeped under tarp. The circled marks is no longer under the concrete. It’s just the concrete shelf now. Dirt washed down into pond. How do I fill up under the concrete wall? Any suggestions? Not sure if it’s possible to backfill soil some how? How can I clean this up and add the shelves back? Thank you so much. You always give great advice. You helped me add my shelves back to that other side in an earlier post when I first signed on. Appreciate it again

When you start your pond…..you want it to be right, from the start. That was my reason for the pond rebuild with a collar. Clay ”soil” slippage and water hippos (where water from the water table creeps under the liner and pushes up on the liner.). I had a good berm built, but gravity was stronger than my berm. I know what you mean about rain and clay.

Personally, if it was my pond — and I’m sure you have a LOT of time and effort invested already — I would TRY to start over. Don’t worry about underfilling the concrete — I honestly don’t think that is going to work for you — but that’s just MHO. When I redid my pond, in order to make things work, I had to go bigger, wider, to make up for what wasn’t there anymore. You need a good level, solid foundation for that concrete.

Are you using rebar with the cement?
