I'm thinking about using a large piece of PVC (12" diameter) in my pond for a koi cave? Is there any problem with putting untreated PVC pipe in a fish pond?

Thanks.

Hello
No problem that I ever saw or had problems with.
I used pvc made plant stands and used it for pump piping.

Only thing is watch for sharp edges
I found off corners and pad the ends with pond liner scraps.

Hello

I did notknow that there was treated and untreated PVC.

I think he is asking if it needs to be treated, with something to make it fish safe.

I just wash it real good.

What is untreated PVC?

Well, live and learn!! It seems that the appropriate question would be--What is treated PVC?
Apparently treated PVC is a not so uncommon thing. Just a quick look around uncovered PVC being treated through various methods for specialty applications...from wire insulation to fabric coatings and many more.
There is, however, only one form of PVC pipe that is commonly available....untreated.

I think maybe they may be thinking about plastics that are not safe .There has been a lot of stuff on TV about unsafe plastic containers .Even some flower pots were in question about safety .But I don't think I will be putting food in my flower pots any time soon .But maybe it effects edible plants in them ,not sure .I know some older plastic bowls our moms used to use were made of the plastic

So, @Meyer Jordan, "treated" is not your off-the-shelf Home Depot PVC......it's a special purpose kind? Did not know that.

@sissy You may be thinking of BPA. You see "BPA free" now on most packaging for [sports bottles and] almost any plastics that will be in contact with food or water [for consumption].

Sorry for the confusion all. I meant could regular old PVC (the Home Depot/Lowe's type) be put into a pond without any coating (treated) to make it fish safe. Thanks for the feedback.

Regular old PVC pipe is fine to use, as is. But, I would clean it well, to remove any greasy residue, etc. I soak mine in the bath tub (it has a better life than I do, LOL), hot water, and throw in a couple of dishwasher pods -- but that's when I have really dirty pieces, or if it's for craft use. Then rinse well. Sparkling clean!
