I know they do a specialised pond heater for QT tanks and they are made from metal not glass they even have a cut out Switch should your water level drop.
There is always the prolem with the glass heater of fish getting burned if they rest on the glass heaters not so the metal one , gie me time to dig it out and I'll let you know what its called however I have to find the damn thing yet lol

Before addressing the best options for a heater, it may be easier if you decide where it is going. You had posted a QT couldnt nolonger go into the climate controlled area of the barn due to the cats .. a good net, well secured with SCREWS and I dont see an issue. If the temp is controlled, a heater may not be needed at all ... If you want to maintain a temp slightly above what the room in the barn is set at, I would buy an aquarium heater meant for a tank around 200 gallons ... the best place to look for a reasonable price would be marine aquarium sites, as it is common for tanks of that size, unlike a Petsmart type store.

Husband gave me another heated room in the barn (Cat Proof:) and has built me a 150 gallon tank with filter. We found the metal heater Dave mentions online and I did order it last night. The heat in this room is electric and I can set the thermostat. Room is well insulated and should not be to expense to heat. What water temp would you suggest to maintain fish health for the winter. Thanks for your help!

What are your goals? Are you going to keep fish here through the winter, or just for a period of time to QT and move to your pond?

We have two ponds in our basement. The 600 gallon pond had a heater on it last year to maintain 70 degrees for tropical plants. The 750 gallon pond had no heater, and in the coldest of the winter dropped to 58-60, which was warm enough to keep feedings.

For a period of QTing, you may also want to raise the temp, but without knowing your plans, dont want to explain this yet (I need coffee LOL).

If your wanting to feed then it has to be above 10c or 50f remember though if they are eating they are also creating detritus that will need to be cleaned out ad water changes done.
So that is your next problem , how do you aim to keep your water temmperatures matched which is a must ?.

Capewind drink your coffee I will need lots of advice

Dave this tank has 7 very small Koi to keep filter balanced and hopefully I can add several nice Koi in the next few months. These guys need to be quarantined . I will waste away when my pond fish go deep and settle in for the cold weather as I spend a large part of my day watching them. Our plan for water changes involves a 50 gallon portable tank which is in that room and should be very close in temp. Just think all this work and money for 7 little fish (and my sanity)! My goal would be to keep 2 or 3 8 to 10 inch Butterfly Koi until spring. I can enjoy them no matter how cold it gets here. All is well here but keep advice coming guys you are much appreciated.

Room temp this morning is 72 and the water is 70 degrees. My heater comes today and I will aim for a temp of 74 to 78. We are going to put extra water tank on a platform as it is gravity fed. PH and Saline are great what else should I be worrying about at this point.

Same here only not in my pond but a fish tank. I added a fish without quarantine that "looked" okay to me and it ended up killing some of my favorite fish.

Even though I knew better I took a chance and I will never do that again. Still makes me upset when I think about the fish I lost.

1 Small fish jumped out of quarantine tank through the only 12 inches of tank not covered. Imagine that...... this really is an exact hobby no short cuts allowed.
