It is if you ever plan on having fish! If not then it's up to you as long as you are willing to take the risks of what they say it does to you. It supposedly turns to fertilizer after awhile.

Is Roundup a dirty word around here?
Yes & no. Around here we try to be as natural & organically green as possible, but... there are a few stubborn plants that we do selectively 'hit' with chemical control (ie - Roundup) It also depends on the season. I'm a bit less manically neurotic about NO!!! chemicals early in the season. Once 'my' baby toads start leaving the pond & hopping up, out & beyond.... Well, there is NO 'Rounduping' going on around here then. Unless... it's on one of the random trumpet vines that pops up. Those get isolated & sprayed with whatever it takes to take...them...out! (The fallopia fall into this catagory as well) But broadcast spraying of herbicide? Nope. Not gonna do that to my itty-bitty wildlife.

I never put my pump on the bottom .I hang it from a metal pipe and if i need to get to them I just pull the pipe to my side and pull on the rope .On the bottom if a hose breaks you will drain the pond .you can see the pipe and rope and 1 air line

No I use roundup. OW no way to control the poison ivy that is on steroids here (I am highly allergic to it) the honey suckle vines, virginia creeper , that one vine covered with tiny thorns heart shaped leaves , miserable if you grab with a glove, the bramble that goes crazy around here. Thorny miserable pop up everywhere junk.

I do get totally covered up, long pants, long sleeves, sun glasses, gloves. Also stay up wind of the spray, so I don't get misted by it.

Back to the original topic:

So here's what I decided to do. Forget the timer. The pump will run 24/7.

Since that pump is the only means of filtering and aerating the pond, it's kind of critical. So instead of ordering a timer and the associated electrical hardware to install it, I ordered a spare pump. :)

BTW, I've been using Roundup as long as I can remember. I find that when handled responsibly, it is an invaluable weapon in the perpetual war against the weeds.
