Was recently reading about pond snails. Are "trapdoor" snails the only ones that will over-winter in a pond? I have a dozen or so of the "mystery" snails, or whatever they are, that they sell in pet stores. I kinda like all the colors they come in as I can see them roving around. I want to get more, but not if they aren't going to make it through the winter. Should I try for more of them, or go on and order some "trapdoors?" ZONE 8 if that matters.

Well I have tons of snails, trap doors and other, they seem to do fine with the winter, because they sure are not gone the next summer.

Guess you will have to just make sure when you get snails that you know what kind they are as I'm sure some are tropical for indoor aquariums and might not make it in a cold environment. I too have lots of little ones that make it through our zone 7 winters but I haven't a clue on what kind they are. They just came w/ plants.

TM, Mystery snails can survive if you have a light winter like we had last year. If we get a cold winter with a week or longer of below freezing temps and they hold down there the snails might not survive. trapdoors will survive and they don't over populate like Mystery snails can. there are some other species that can make it. Apple snails can also make it if it's a warm winter as well

Thing is they don't clean big time and the pond is a pain to net the bottom .I dislike having them now as it takes forever to sort through the muck you take out to find the little buggers .
