If you just added a source of biological filtration that is the source of your algae bloom, there is/was no or little to none beneficial bacteria to eat all your nitrates, or ammonia you currently have.

Meant to say ammonia & nitrites.
Nitrates are what is released by the beneficial bacteria after it consumes the following; ammonia and nitrites.

Beneficial bacteria do not oxidize Nitrate. Only certain anaerobic bacteria will provide this function.
