Good news the pond seems to have survived the winter. The ice finally melted completely yesterday. Went into deep freeze beginning of January. Unfortunately had to turn off the external pump abruptly because the ice had caused the water level to go down and the pump was struggling. I did not put away my water hoses properly so could not fill the pond. So no pump for the last couple of months. It went on yesterday, it is working but the pump is noticeably louder, it used to just hum but now it has a louder buzzing noise (hard to describe), it is full of water in the priming bucket, dont think anything is stuck in it. I have never turned the pump off for an extended time so I dont know if it needs lubrication after a certain amount of time.
The fish seem fine, all made it through the winter, even the babies. Now there is just a lot of cleaning up to do.

We shut our pond down the first winter and vowed to never do it again if we could help it. Too many issues occurred over winter - like the bog getting stinky and the marginal plants all freezing and dying. We learned to keep a short run of hose inside so we always had the ability to fill the pond when needed. It's shocking how much water you can lose over winter - both to the ice and just to the cold, dry air. The worst years for water loss have been when we had delayed ice/snow cover. Once the pond is covered the evaporation is cut way down. I'm not saying it's fun to get out there mid-winter and hook that hose up, but it's better than not being able to and knowing the pond needs it. I take advantage of any warm-ish day that comes our way to fill er up!

Pond season is here - woo hooo!

Just fortunate I don't have to shut my pond down at all as our winters are pretty mild w/hardly any real hard freezing. Rain fills the pond all winter.

it may have back siphoned a pebble and it's now stuck between in impeller. Or it may be the base of the pump to what ever its stetting on maybe worn and making the noise

Thanks. Definitely not the base, it is a very consistent buzzing noise, almost like a drone, not a vibrating noise. I turned it off, checked the filter basket, no issues there. Water filled up the priming pot fine. Still makes the noise. The waterfalls disguise the noise until I walk over to the side of the pond where the pump is, then you cannot miss it. Very strange. PerformancePro pump.

definitely sounds like a pebble back siphoned. disconnect the pump and turn it upside down flush with water / turn vertical flush with water etc etc flush every direction possible

I turn all off, pump lays out by the pond with a cover on it.
Been using the same pump 24 years now.

The bog never stinks with turn on, all plants survive just fine.

I have always had the attitude, if you live without my interference you get to live here. Plants that live here have survived droughts, freezes, excess rain.

Just got the big pond running, need to do a different feed for my lotus tank since we did a rescue of the plants, new tank install, last fall.

Oh I just dont pay much attention to the Hamptons in the off season. We just go to our cottage there in the summer, fabulous parties with white wine spritzers and brie. But I hear the common folk like it there during the off season;)

But actually the last two weeks have been a whirlwind with my daughter's college decisions coming in. And they all revolve around being near you in CT. She got into Trinity and Connecticut College and then the big surprise was Vassar. She has committed to Vassar, they gave an unbelievable scholarship. So you will see us passing by as we go to Poughkeepsie several times over the next few years!

nope can't stand it any time of the year this time of year is just as crazy with traffic as is the summer but it's called the trades parade. As all the trades are working hard to get get the new builds and remodeling done before the stupid blue bloods arrive. Whats that why did i say stupid ? well what do you call someone who drives a lamborgini sport ute to the grocery store and parks between two cars like common folk. this photo is an incomplete build on billionare row in south hampton.Just because you made lots of money at one thing doesn't mean your good at everything. Money can't buy good taste.
