When cleaning my pond today, I noticed a water lily was escaping one of my pots. I cut it off, but didn't want to get rid of it, so I thought... it was already growing outside of the pot, so what if I just tie it to a rock to weigh it down and set it on a shelf or on the bottom. Will it grow like that? I won't be able to fertilize it like I can with the potted lilies, but it would still add a little plant life to the pond if it grows.

Yep I have all mine like that now tied to rocks and they grow but not as good as the planted fertilized ones I had before. Maybe after they get bigger they will produce better tho.

I have thought of doing that but fear they may take over the pond. I saw a YouTube video once of a pond where they had to pull one out with a chain and a pick up truck!

They get real heavy when they collect the root muck. A few that sent roots out of the pots where almost impossible to lift. The two I tried to grow with a rock tied to them never did well. Mine are all potted up

I think that it being out of a pot may actually benefit me in that way. I can manage it at any given time. If I see that the things getting a little too big, I can cut it, whereas a pot can disguise how big it's really gotten. Or maybe it won't benefit me at all. :)

I'll try it for awhile and see what happens. If it either does too poorly or becomes a pain in the butt, I'll remove it.

True you can see a pot bust open from overgrowth .I took out a water iris in a pond and it took my truck in 4x4 mode to pull it out and even started to pull the liner out with it .I had to abandon that part until I got the fish out and after liner was not worth anything .Any plant can get out of control

Ugh... you are right! Irises can be just as bad! I'm staring down one I planted two years ago - we are going to have a talk any day now!... the plant, me, and my spade!
