I am curious about why they don't need dissolved oxygen and filtration over winter. Is it because they are dormant and not producing the high levels of ammonia they do in summer ?
Yes. They do need oxygen but less because of the dormancy. The colder water also holds more oxygen than warm and the filter bacteria go dormant also, reducing their oxygen demands.

Got it and Got it. Thank you both. I am curious about why they don't need dissolved oxygen and filtration over winter. Is it because they are dormant and not producing the high levels of ammonia they do in summer ?
I am on the side where I do pump air into the water but my pump is not outside. A few members have super chilled the water having the pump outside. But if you put it in the teepee you should be fine .
